There is no age restriction for car import in New Zealand.
You can import right-hand drive vehicles into the country
There are restrictions on the import of left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles, and left-hand drive vehicles (LHD) are converted to right-hand drive vehicles before registering and driving on the road in New Zealand.
Before importing a vehicle into New Zealand from Japan, JEVIC and Quarantine inspection (MAF Biosecurity) must be done in Japan.
Moreover, all the used vehicles from Japan need to pass through Biosecurity clearance as they might contain several biosecurity contaminants, including high-risk pest species such as the Lymantria diaper (Asian gypsy moth). This is done to determine the type and degree of slippage.
The vehicles must undergo compliance checks before they can be driven on New Zealand roads. Keep in mind that if your vehicle has chassis damage, it will fail the compliance check, and you will have to pay a massive amount in repair costs.
Generically, no tariff duty is applied on automobiles, and they are only subjected to a 15% sales tax.

As of January 1st, 2012, imported vehicles must have a 3-digit emissions code. Most cars from 2004 onwards meet this requirement, while vans and heavy trucks may require 2007 or later models. Vehicles over 20 years old qualify as ‘special interest’ and are exempt.
All vehicles entering New Zealand must be checked, certified, registered, and licensed before you can use them on the road. This process is called entry certification. All new and used vehicles must be entry-certified before they come to New Zealand. For more information, click here.
Before driving in New Zealand, all vehicles must pass a compliance check, which can be done at AA, VTNZ, or a private center, costing around $400-$500. Vehicles with chassis damage will fail and require expensive repairs. Please consult our team in New Zealand if you are concerned about being charged extra.
To prove ownership and register a vehicle, you need a de-registration/export certificate, commercial invoice, and bill of lading. SAT Japan will send these documents via DHL.

This Corolla Axio Hybrid surprised me in a very good way. It is quiet, comfortable and using much less fuel than my previous car. The silver colour looks smart and the body condition was better than I expected. Driving is smooth even when sitting in traffic for long time. After arrival, I checked the hybrid system and everything was working correctly. The cabin is clean, air conditioner is cold and seats are comfortable. The vehicle is not luxury, but it is practical, strong and carrying enough goods for my work. Engine starts quickly every morning and suspension is handling our roads better than expected. My Mazda Demio is small car but very enjoyable to drive. Fuel consumption is good and steering feels light, especially inside busy town. The white body was still shining nicely when I received it. Interior also came in fair and clean condition. SAT Japan communication was helpful. They answered my questions about the car and sent the necessary information before shipping. I was little worried because it was my first import, but everything went okay. This Demio is perfect for daily movement and parking is very easy. Only some small scratches were there, which is normal for used vehicle. Overall, I got good value for my money and the car is serving me without problem.
Very happy with this Toyota Hiace. The van arrived looking clean and strong, same condition like I was shown before buying. Engine is running smoothly and there was no strange noise. It has good space inside, so it is useful for business and also carrying many passengers. SAT Japan handled export papers properly and kept me informed about shipment. The vehicle took some time at port, but this was not their fault. After receiving it, I only made normal service and started using it. Hiace is reliable vehicle and parts are easy to find here. I am satisfied with this purchase and hope to order another commercial vehicle from SAT Japan later.
