The Nissan X-Trail has evolved from a simple yet adventure-inspired SUV to a technologically advanced electrified SUV. The T30 and T31 are renowned for their versatility in the 4WD arena, and the T32 offers hybrid power and greater road comfort. The T33 is different: with e-POWER and e-4ORCE, power is supplied by electric motors that drive the wheels. This is important when purchasing a used Nissan X-Trail. There can be two X-Trails with the same name and vastly different driving systems, equipment, and ownership requirements. Therefore, the first thing you should know is the generation, which will help you select the right used Nissan X-Trail car.
The T30 (2000-2007) introduced the X-Trail's outdoor theme with washable luggage boards, water-repellent seats, and the option of ALL MODE 4x4.
The T31 (2007–2013) introduced ALL MODE 4x4-i, which includes a Yaw Movement Control system that controls torque using the vehicle's sensors during cornering. In addition, there was the added option of Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.
The T32 (2013-2022) featured a more sophisticated version of the SUV powered by petrol and hybrid engines, ALL MODE 4x4-i, Active Ride Control, and advanced driver-assistance equipment. Previous models were provided with Intelligent Around View Monitor and ProPILOT.
The T33 (2022- present in Japan) has brought e-POWER and e-4ORCE. The electric motors and brake control dictate how four-wheel traction is managed, in a different way than previous mechanical systems.
The generation plays a big role in the driving technology you will get on a used Nissan X-Trail.
The X-Trail's powertrain changes significantly from generation to generation. The T31 is based on traditional petrol engines, and the T32 is based on both petrol and hybrid.
The T33 is a completely different vehicle. The 1.5L VC-TURBO engine is a power generator that drives the e-POWER system and does not power the wheels directly. Electric motors supply the actual wheel drive. Nissan's e-4ORCE models are powered by a front motor delivering 150 kW and a rear motor delivering 100 kW.
That factor is important when purchasing a used Nissan X-Trail. You can't tell from a listing that the vehicle has a 1.5L engine. If the vehicle is a conventional petrol T32 or a T33 e-POWER, check if e-4ORCE is fitted. On paper, the engine size may be the same, but there is a significant difference in how the power is generated and delivered to the wheels.
There are noticeable differences in X-Trail safety tech from generation to generation. Active Ride Control, Active Engine Brake and Cornering Stability Assist were added to the T32, with the later models incorporating Intelligent Around View Monitor and ProPILOT.
Advanced e-4ORCE's combined front- and rear-motor electric control and individual wheel braking take the T33 to new heights. According to Nissan, this helps in controlling the car's traction, cornering, and movement on various surfaces.
When comparing used cars, the trims assigned by X-Trail can be misleading. For instance, a T32 20X can vary by powertrain (2WD/4WD), seating arrangement, and equipment, and T32 hybrid grades are equipped with a different powertrain.
The T33 is another level. The NissanConnect features are limited to certain models, may vary by year and grade, and are available on Japanese-market models; standard audio or the 9-speaker Bose Premium Sound System may also be standard or optional.
When looking for a second-hand Nissan X-Trail, a grade name is not the only way to judge. Match the following: generation, model code, grade, powertrain, drivetrain, and actual equipment list. There can be significant differences in specifications between two X-Trails with similar names.
The Nissan X-Trail price can vary widely depending on which X-Trail you select. This is seen in the current listings of SAT Japan. Some older T31 models are available at lower prices, but T32 models with lower mileage can command much higher prices. A 2023 T33 Autech e-4ORCE with 11,000 km is listed at $22,915.
Much of this difference is explained in the specifications. When looking at a T31 or T32, check the model code, engine, mileage, transmission, grade, and 2WD/4WD system. Also, with a T32 hybrid or T33 e-POWER, you should consider the various electrified powertrains. Just because it is a newer year doesn't mean it's a better value.
If you're considering buying a used Nissan X-Trail, make sure to compare it to similar models and generations first. Next, compare the price with mileage, condition, and equipment. It will give you a much better idea of what you are paying for.
A used Nissan X-Trail can have two completely different hybrid designs. The T32 is a hybrid of a gas-operated engine and an electric motor, whereas the T33 is Nissan's e-POWER system.
The difference is important. On the T33, the gasoline engine powers an electric generator rather than driving the wheels directly. The electric motors power the wheels, providing a driving feel similar to an EV without the need for an external charger.
There is also an important step called e-4ORCE. For selected models, T33 versions include individual electric motors at the front and rear for 4-wheel drive. This does not work like the mechanical all-wheel-drive systems of previous-generation X-Trails.
When buying a used 2023 Nissan X-Trail, you are viewing the T33 generation. This is a significant revision of the previous T32.
The most significant change is the powertrain. The T33 features Nissan's e-POWER system, which generates electricity using a gasoline engine, with the electric motors powering the wheels. That means the engine does not drive the wheels directly, unlike a traditional petrol X-Trail.
The 4ORCE system is an optional feature on selected T33 models, with electric motors powered by separate front and rear batteries and 4WD brake control. This is a different technique from the mechanical 4WD of previous X-Trail models.
The term “4WD” is not always the same for a used Nissan X-Trail. The T31 and T32 use Nissan's ALL MODE 4x4-i system. It can control the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions across various versions. The T31 also added Yaw Movement Control to help control the vehicle in corners.
The T33 e-4ORCE is much different. Rather than a single mechanical drive to power the front and rear axles, it has two electric motors, one front and one rear, powered by brake control for four-wheel drive.
This is important when comparing the two used X-Trails. The T32 4WD and the T33 e-4ORCE are not two models of the same system. They are different generations of X-Trail 4WDs. Thus, make sure to check the generation, drivetrain, and powertrain.
For a good Nissan X-Trail used-car review, it's important to check the parts that differ across generations. When using a T30 or T31, note the following: 4WD operation, suspension, underbody condition, and heavy signs of outdoor use. The CVT is particularly worth checking, especially if it's a T32 petrol; check its service record and test for judder, hesitation, or odd behavior. Nissan also has additional CVT fluid inspection requirements for severe use.
The first step in locating used Nissan X-Trail parts is to determine which X-Trail you're searching for. T30, T31, T32, and T33 are various generations, and T32 has codes like HT32 and HNT32. Nissan also lists them separately in its own documentation: T33 and SNT33.

Older T31 models are listed, as are petrol and hybrid T32s and other X-Trail variants, featuring year, mileage, engine size, transmission, and price.
The right used Nissan X-Trail is the most recent and best suited to your driving habits, not necessarily the only new or cost-effective option available.
