There is no age limit for importing used cars from Japan to Tanzania. However, when importing a used car that is 8 years old or more, calculated from the year of manufacture, an additional excise tax will be imposed.
From July 1, 2023, the threshold for additional age-based excise duty was reduced from 10 years to 8 years. This is a tax threshold, not a ban on importing older vehicles.
Vehicles aged 8 years or more are subject to additional age-based excise duty.

Vehicles aged more than 10 years but not more than 20 years: 35%
Vehicles aged more than 20 years: 40%
Tanzania follows left-hand traffic, so right-hand-drive vehicles are the standard and most suitable option. Importers of left-hand-drive vehicles should confirm eligibility with the relevant Tanzanian authorities before shipment.
Before the cars from Japan can be used on the roads of Tanzania, they must go through a rigid safety check. Used vehicles exported from Japan must undergo a Tanzania Bureau of Standards-approved pre-shipment roadworthiness inspection.
