The fuel economy of any Toyota Vitz can be outstanding, but assigning a single rating to all Vitz would be wrong. The fuel-economy numbers vary by Toyota, depending on the engine and configuration. In fact, during its second-generation launch, fuel consumption data for different versions ranged from 17.6 km/L to 22.0 km/L.
The hybrid raised the published figure by a considerable amount. The Vitz Hybrid was launched in 2017 and claimed a fuel consumption of 34.4 km/L in Japan's JC08 test cycle. This is a number associated with this particular test method and configuration; it is not a guaranteed real-world figure.
While the hybrid is the obvious answer for efficiency on paper, it's not just about the numbers when deciding on a purchase. As for the cost of the hybrid, if it is significantly more expensive, determine the total cost savings over the vehicle's life. Also consider the condition of the hybrid components and battery. When comparing petrol models, look at the actual engine and transmission, not just the smallest engine; it won't win.
Toyota's reputation can make a Vitz attractive, but brand reputation is not a condition report. The oldest Vitz models are now more than 20 years old. If the model has a good reputation, that doesn't excuse the need to consider age-related wear.
If possible, check the engine when it is cold. Check for poor starting, rough idling, smoke, oil leaks, coolant leaks, unusual sounds, or warning lights. Don't assess the engine based on cleanliness alone. Mechanical health is best determined by its behavior, fluid condition, diagnostics, and maintenance history.
Many later Vitz versions use CVT-type transmissions. Try gentle and more intensive acceleration while driving.
