Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the Botswana

Age Restriction

There is no age restriction on the import of used automobiles in Botswana.

Right-Hand Drive

Import of right-hand drive automobiles is permitted in Botswana.

Inspection

No specific inspection is required on the import of used vehicles.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Botswana

  • One car per family is duty-free. 

  • More than one car in the family or subsequent entries are subjected to 15-20% VAT of CIF value. 

  • You can enter without charge within 6 months of receiving your work permit. After that, a 10% value-added tax will be imposed. 

  • Automobiles must remain in the possession of the importer for two years from the date of importation and cannot be sold or disposed of during that time.

  • Customs duty of 27% is applicable on automobiles imported to Botswana. VAT charged by local authorities will be 12% of the automobile’s value. 

Documentation Required on Import of Vehicle in Botswana

Here are the appropriate documents required to be submitted to Botswana 

  • Certificate of Title and Registration  (ensuring that the automobile has been owned and used for one year)

  • Automobile Evaluation Document 

  • Acquired from a licensed pre-owned car dealer

  • Registration and proof of ownership  

  • import permit 

  • IC 2 Application: Attained from destination agent, submitted to Ministry of Commerce 

  • custom declaration form SAD 500 

  • Police clearance certificate from Botswana Police Service and export country
