Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the Lesotho

Age Restriction

There is no age restriction on the import of Automobile in Lesotho.

Right-Hand Drive

Lesotho has a right-hand drive policy, and therefore, you cannot import left-hand drive vehicles.

Inspection

All the used vehicles imported into the country are required to go through pre-delivery inspection in their country of origin.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Lesotho

Tax duty rate depends on various factors such as the type of vehicle and its value. The custom duty on used vehicles is levied as per the rate in the tariff book. 

VAT is calculated at the standard rate on Cost, Freight, Insurance, and customs duty (CIF +Duty)

Custom Duty - Custom duty of up to 25%  applicable 

VAT-  15% of VAT is imposed and is calculated as sales tax (CIF + Custom duty + other taxes)

Required Documents on Import of Used Cars in Lesotho

  • Bill of Lading (BK) 

  • Certificate of Title and Registration 

  • Original Passport 

  • Commercial Invoice 

  • Letter of value 

  • Import permit 

  • International insurance policy

Customs Clearance & Registration Process

Documents needed for customs clearance and vehicle registration are:

  1. Cancellation Certificate [both in Japanese & in English].
  2. Bill of Lading [Original 1st & 2nd].
  3. Commercial Invoice.
  4. Letter of Authorization [The letter confirming that you are giving legal rights to the clearing agent to act on your behalf].
  5. Identification Document, for example, a Passport.

Step 1:

The documents from 1-3 (Cancellation Certificate, Bill of Lading, and Invoice) mentioned above will be sent to you via DHL. Please prepare the letter of authorization and identification document yourself.

Step 2:

Prepare for the local customs clearance. You can reach out to us to get guidance on how to avail our customs clearance service or also arrange your own preferred agent.

Step 3:

Besides customs clearance, there will also be a process for duty and tax payment, a temporary permit, police check for registration, and a roadworthiness check to obtain a number plate. A local clearing agent in Lesotho will be helpful for these procedures.

Note: Freight charges in Lesotho depend on the vehicle size. For example, Small Cars - $700, Sedans - $850, Van & Small Trucks - $1000).
